Jak2 et positive

Hi I got diagnosed with jak2 et yesterday I am 34 years an I am worried sick. Can anyone help me to understand this more?

  • Hello concerned_mum

I can see that you've posted in our Ask the Nurses topic area and they will respond to your post with some information and support as soon as they can.

In the meantime, I wanted to just post a reply to let you know that we've lots of people here on the forum who are living with essential thrombocythemia - some of whom have the Jak2 gene. I'd suggest having a look through this thread and posting a message to introduce yourself. Hopefully you'll be able to connect with others there who have the same diagnosis. You can also use the forum search function to look for posts where the phrases "essential thrombocythemia" and "jak2" are mentioned.

I hope this helps and as I said, the nurses will be along probably tomorrow to give you some more information.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Concerned_Mum,

I'm sorry to hear you are having such a worrying time at the moment.

It can be scary to be diagnosed with a condition and feel like you don't know much about it.

Essential thrombocythaemia (ET) is a blood disorder which causes the bone marrow to produce blood cells in an uncontrolled way.  It can affect people of any age.  The JAK2 gene makes a protein that controls how many blood cells the stem cells make.

A fault with your JAK2 gene means the stem cells can start producing platelets when they're not meant to. Around 60 in 100 people (around 60%) with ET have a fault in the JAK2 gene.  Many people with this condition feel well and only need gentle treatment.

We do have some information about this on our website, which you might like to read.  This explains the condition in more detail.

There is also some information about places to get support here which you might like to have a look at.

I hope this is useful and helps you to feel you understand a little more about the condition.

Please get back to us if you want any more information or support.

You might like to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take Care
