CA19.9 - gynaecological causes?

I went to the GP end of June with irregular and prolonged bleeding and wwas referred for a 2 week referral. That resulted in an ultrasound and hystersocpy where they told me I had polyps, womb lining of 14.9 mm and an unidentified adnexal mass in the right hand side. So I was sent for blood tests for tumour markers, MRI and CT scan of pelvic cavity and pancreas.

Outcome from all of this and decision from MDT - was fibroids, a couple of benign looking cysts on each ovary of between 2cm and 5.5cm each. Nothing of any concern but I was to repeat the blood tests in 6 weeks and have a further womb biopsy and ultrasound scan in 6 months to check on the cysts.

I then had an apppointment through for the removal of the fibroids this week - subsequently cancelled and pushed back to Feb. And a letter requesting further blood tests as my CA19.9 was still elevated in Sept and that I was now also being discussed in the Upper GI MDT meetings

December blood tests show the CA19.9 has gone up again and I'm to have another MRI within 2 weeks. My question is - is CA19.9 always linked to the pancreas or can it be due to the cysts? I was quite relaxed about it all, especially since I've been feeling a lot better recently compared to when I first saw my GP but now they've started talking about the pancreas or gall bladder I am so so worried

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

The CA 19-9 is a tumour marker blood test used to see if someone could have pancreatic cancer. However, like all tumour markers they can be higher than normal in people with other health problems (and not cancer)  such as gallstones for instance and could be higher because of cysts on your pancreas.

They aren't a perfect test and like all tumors markers are really only helpful in people with cancer to see how a treatment is working or if  a cancer is recurring.

It sounds like the team looking after you is being very thorough, so don't assume you necessarily have cancer.
