malignancy seen on CT

Hi,

I was wondering if someone may be able to help.

Is a malignant growth only confirmed via a biopsy or can it be confirmed by a MRI and PET scan? My brother has a suspicipus growth which is consultant thinks is malignant, but says will only be confirmed via biopsy - could it be benign or am i clutching at straws?

  • Hi and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear that your brother is having investigations. A consultant can get quite a good idea by looking at an MRI and a PET scan by the shape and size of the growth but this would need to be confirmed by a biopsy. When a biopsy is taken the pathologist will look at the cells under a microscope and will be able to confirm whether there is cancer.

When a cancer is suspected all the results including the biopsy are discussed at a formal meeting where all the different doctors involved in your brothers care look at the different tests to work out what is causing that growth. I am sure that his doctors will be in touch with your brother when they have got all the results and discussed his case.

    I hope this helps.

If you or your brother would like to ring and chat with one of the helpline nurses then you are very welcome to do so.

We are here from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040.

    All the Best,

    Catherine
