Adenomyosis

Hi all

I wasn't sure whether to post on here however I'm in real need of some help. I'm already signed off work with stress due to strikes and uncertainty over jobs and recently went for a scan due to my very painful aching periods & wanting a family.

I had a scan and they told me I have Adenomyosis in one area of my uterus. I was told before it was a fibroid so was very shocked and went on to ask my doctor for some information about it. I havnt been given an appointment till 13th January next year so with that said and being signed off from work I can't imagine freaking out for the entire duration about this so thought I'd reach out to see if I can get an understanding from anyone who knows what this is.

I googled it and now I'm worried sick as it says I'm not at a significantly higher risk of getting cancer because I have Adenomyosis. Can it change into endo cancer? Do I have a ticking time bomb inside me.. the Internet says women with endo cancer Adenomyosis and other changes were usually present in those casses.

My dad passed away of prostate cancer so I'm more scared than ever.

I'm worried that it could cause miscarriage too as I'm hoping to be successful at ivf. My parter had testicular cancer stage 1 aswell which was treated.

Any helps greatly apologise.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry that you are having to wait until the 13th of January for your appointment and I can understand that you are keen to have as much information as possible about what the doctors have seen on your scan.

Adenomyosis is a common condition affecting 1 in 10 women of reproductive age so you are not alone. It is a condition where the lining of the womb is found deep in the muscle of the womb leading to heavy irregular sometimes painful periods.

As you said yourself it is a benign non cancer condition and it does not increase your risk of getting cancer. Treatment is dependent on how the symptoms are affecting you.

I am sure your doctor will take in to account your desire to have a family through IVF and I am sure will be able to advise you on what your next steps should be.

The NHS have written some more information about this condition here

I can understand that having had other members of your family affected by cancer can have such an affect on how you feel about your own health but try if you can not to let it cloud your judgement.

I would stay away from google as it is general and usually ends up causing more anxiety.

You may find it helpful to look at the NHS website called 'Every Mind Matters' which has tips on helping managing anxiety. Have a look here

I am sorry to hear about how stress has affected your work and hopefully when you have seen your doctor  they will be able to put your mind at rest.

Do try and take one day at a time.

I wish you all the best,

    Catherine
