CA - 125 Level 67 Ku/L

My Mrs had overian cysts and endometriosis for around 6 years.
She is 39 years old.
She had some polyps removed 5 years ago.
She had her one ultrasound 1 year ago and she was told all well.
She was again sent for ultrasound last month as she always complained serve pain during her periods , gynaecologist again diagonised overin cysts and overian polyps but never mentioned anything eles.
She got a call from GP next day and he said her ultrasound results come back and he refered her to a gynaecologist and GP asked fpr CA 125 test, which come back with higher  level 67 Ku/L.
Her gynaecologist appointment is in 2 weeks time.
I am very worried  getting her  overian cancer, but no one ever told her that they found some cancer in her altrasound.
Why did her GP sent her for CA 125 blood test ?
I am getting really worried.

I keep on thinking about cancer !

Kindly help me in this matter.

Thanks

  • Hi the CA125 test is because of the ovarian cyst to rule out anyting nasty, your wife is only 39 so CA125 can be raised because of the time of month etc .

I don't know what to say other than what I said and I only know this as i also had a CA125 test for an ovarian cyst but mine was normal I am postmenopausal.

But I do know that hormone fluctuations can make an CA125 test higher .

  • Thanks for your reply !

Could it mean be cancerous thing one of the outcome of ovarian cyst ruled out nasty ?

  • Others opinions would be really appreciated.

  • Hello there and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about your Mrs and can understand you are worried about her.

During the ultrasound they are able to view all the female organs and from here can pick up anything unusual going on such as cysts. There are different types of cysts and depending on the features seen and the size of the cysts they can sometimes want to do more investigations to find out more.

A CA125 blood test checks for inflammatory levels in the pelvic region and can be raised for many reasons as well as cancer. A gynaecologist sometimes will calculate the risk score for something more sinister going on called the Risk of Malignancy Index (RMI) using the ca 125 blood test, the ultrasound finding as well as the woman's age ( pre or post menopausal). This helps guide what may need to happen next and whether any treatment is needed such as surgery.

Cancer can't usually be detected or confirmed by an ultrasound rather abnormal or suspicious findings can be seen that need further investigating as I say. Do remember though ovarian cancer is more likely to occur in older ladies who have gone through the menopuase.

Try not to over think things for now and wait and see what the doctor says at the appointment.

I hope everything works out okay but do get back if you need to.

    Best wishes to you both.

    Naomi
