Thickened endometrial lining

Hi

After an ultrasound scan, I have been told that my endometrium measures 5.7mm. Due to this I have been referred to gynaecology and am worried sick.

I am also worried about the tests and how painful they may be. I am post menopausal and only presented due to a bacterial vaginal infection that has now cleared with antibiotics.

Has anyone had anything similar or can tell me what to expect?

Thank you

  • HI, I know how worrying this is , I am 12 years postmenopausal and had bleeding in August, I just had a biopsy done 21 November uner GA , your lining isn't that thick the cut off point is4mm, mine was 22mm and I am in limbo as they suspected a polyp but it just said biopsy on the report , getting results Tuesday 13 December.

I will just say go with what your gut tells you ,If you are offered a biopsy to see why the endometrium is thicker , then do some research ,  I couldn't have the biopsy done wihtout GA as I had one done without when I was 25 and I found too painful . It might be that they don't do anything after looking at hte scan and fingers crossed they won't .

We are all different and tolerate pain differently , so it is your decision .

I have never heard of having to have a biopsy for BVI, it will be the measurment they are concerned about , as like I say the cut off point is 4mm , yours is slightly over .

When did you have the scan and have you got an appointment yet ?

  • I had an ultrasound followed by a hysteroscopy and blood tests. Womb lining was only one factor for me - it was 14.9mm - I also had an adnexal mass (turned out following ct and mri scans to be a couple of cysts on each ovary, largest 5.5cm) and also fibroids found. I had biopsies taken during the hysteroscopy.

I found the hysteroscopy/biopsies uncomfortable rather than painful. I was told to take painkillers before the appointment and was told I could have gas and air pain relief if needed or that the procedure could be stopped at any time but it was all over quite quickly. Like welliiybob said though, it is different for everyone so do what is right for you.

I hope everything turns out well for you

  • Hi welliybob, thank you for your reply.

I am hoping that they don't think they need to do anything at the moment as I haven't got any symptoms other than the bacterial infection that has now cleared up. Fingers crossed.

I had the scan 2 weeks ago and my GP doesn't seem overly concerned. She just said to refer to Gynaecology to be on the safe side. I haven't got an appt yet, I'm presuming I will see someone to have a discussion first. To be quite honest, I would be happy to have another scan in say 6months time to monitor the thickness and take it from there.

Good luck with your results on Tuesday.

  • Thank you Leni56.

I hope all goes well for you too. Are you having further treatment?

  • Outcome from my MDT meeting was nothing suspicous found but to repeat blood tests and then after 6 months have a further ultrasound to check on the cysts and another womb biopsy. Blood tests have come back with raised tumour makers but CA19.9 (pancreas) so I'm now under Upper GI Department as well as gynaecology. My next ultrasound and womb biopsies will be in January so fingers crossed the results will be good. I have an appointment through already for the fibroids to be removed in Feb but its all a bit confusing and up in the air at the moment.

  • Aww bless you, you are going through it, aren't you? I really hope all goes well. Please keep me posted and if you want to offload at any time feel free to contact.
