Possible Thyroid Cancer

hi everyone

a quick background story- my dad had bowel cancer removed 3 years ago and thankfully they got it all and his still in the clear. My sister however passed away in October with adenoid cystic carcinoma and fought up until her last breath.
I was sent for an US on my neck due to changes of vocals and other symptoms. The results came back with early onset multilingual goitre and found four T4 lumps ( presumably cancer ) however it's been a month now and still haven't had an appointment for a biopsy? I spoke to the hospital and they said they haven't received any letter, I spoke to the drs and they said well it's been sent ! In the meantime I'm not getting any treatment. I then called ENT secretary ( she was really lovely and understanding of my concerns) this was a week ago now, and still nothing. Should I be worried?

thank you in advance for any responses

  • Hello Neveragain and thank for posting,

I am sorry to learn about your family history of cancer and that you are waiting for tests yourself.

I am not sure about these T4 lumps, but there is a classification system for ultrasounds of the thyroid which goes from U1-U5 . A U4 result is suspicious of cancer so needs further investigation but it might not turn out to be cancer.

I think it is a bit of a worry that the hospital has no record of your referral. I would have thought it would be easy enough to re-send it, so I suggest you check again with the secretary and if no letter can be found, ask your doctors to re-refer you and then speak to the secretary again.

Waiting to find out what is going on is invariably unsettling if not stressful and I think it is fair enough to chase things up.

Hospitals' should have Patient Advice and Liaison Services (PALS) which you could turn to if this doesn't work. You can find your local PALS service here

Feel free to give us a call if you want to talk anything over. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we ae around on 9-5 weekdays,

    Best wishes,

    Julia

  • thank you Julia for your reply.

I have read the note my dr sent to the hospital, which shows its most likely cancer, but the biopsy is just to clarify it and to point me in the right direction regarding treatment. I chased the drs and the hospital, unfortunately I've dealt with pals before and very disappointing. It's just the waiting game, I don't know how long I've had this. I know it's a very slow growing cancer, I'm more concerned that I've been kept waiting a month already given my family history.

  • Hi,

I am in the same situation, with 1 u4 nodule and 1 u3 nodule. I was put on the 2 w w under the nhs. I seen ent who put the camera down my nose to look at vocal box then the biopsy from my understanding its radiology who deal with that and I was told to hassle them. The wait is horrific isnt it? Just in this limbo! Hopefully you hear soon. Just keep hounding xx

  • hi KMC

im so sorry you are going through this too. Yes the waiting is awful, I'm not to worried for myself, I'm more concerned about my family going through this yet again. I've only spoken with one of my sisters about it, and that was hard considering we just lost a sister. But you're right, I'll just keep chasing. It just gets to the point where you feel like your doing their job for them ‍♀️ hope you get sorted soon x

  • Oh totally get this, I've been a bloody nightmare the last 4 weeks whilst going through this as I just want a plan  at this point I've convinced myself its cancer and just want to get this gone so my family are out of limbo I've 3 boys youngest being 7 who need me and I'm bloody sick of calling and hounding people. No one can relax with this going over our heads.

I am so sorry to hear about your sister, and must bring back some awful feelings for you and your family which is so understandable cancer really is a whole mix of ugly emotions never mind the physical strain it puts our bodies under. I am so sick of thinking and worrying about this!

Have u ever had thyroid issues? X

  • well I haven't had thyroid issues before, but nodules on my Esophagus. Gerd, multilingual goitre, bulges in my cervical spine, osteopenia, fibromyalgia, severe IBS the list is endless but i march onwards. I also have three children, but thankfully all adults now, but my youngest still lives with me, I'd hate for him to be put through all this x

  • Oh my goodness wow!! You will be just fine living with all that, this will be a breeze!!

Let's hope whatever it is is out quickly and we can go back to not worrying or chasing anyone. From what they say it's slow spreading and all that, although it doesnt keep me any calmer lol I'm a worrier anyways hate that quality in myself ha ha!

Keep me updated how you get on xx

  • just an update , I called ENT secretary again today, still no appointment made for FNA or biopsy. She looked through all correspondence and said it had gone to someone else and asked to book me in to clinic or possibly one stop clinic in 3-4 weeks! It's been five weeks already. I don't understand why they are leaving this so long, as TR4 nodules, and family history of cancer. It's beginning to stress me out now. I just want to know what I'm dealing with, is it cancer or benign! Don't these drs realise the stress this causes people? People I've spoken to in similar circumstances was sent as urgent two week wait. But my drs ( a dr I've never seen before) as they always have different drs coming and going, seems to be treating this like a toothache. How long should I be waiting for TR4 nodules to be biopsied or FNA? Is it normal to be waiting this long ?

  • Hello and thanks for your further post

I know waiting when you are worried is very stressful.

Unfortunately, there is a NHS backlog causing delays in arranging tests, so this is not unusual at the moment. Unfortunately, we cannot tell you exactly how long you will have to wait as there will be some regional variations in different NHS Trusts.

But, if you don't hear anything by next week, then do ask your GP to enquire, or ring the specialist/consultant secretary again. If you have any difficulty with this you  might want to contact the hospital's Patient Advice and Liaison Service ( PALS)  to discuss your concerns.

I hope you know more soon.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
