We sometimes look at individual research papers, but more often we tend to refer to guidelines as they are usually put together by a panel of experts who agree.  Research studies usually need to be sizable enough in terms of the number of people taking part for the results to be thought of as reliable and they also have to have a sufficient period of follow up to access the overall outcomes. Interpreting them isn't always as straightforward as it may seem.
