High calprotectin

Hi all,

Waiting scope on 2ww but taking much longer. So worried sick. Other bloods all normal. GP trying to reassure saying likley IBD. But I'm telling myself cancer. Researching myself and saying perhaps too high for cancer. Any advice out there

  • Hi Worried1974 and thanks for getting in touch.

It does sound like you are having a stressful time at the moment.

I know all these symptoms can sound very worrying.  But try to remember that they can be caused by other things, not just cancer.  Calprotectin levels can be high for a number of reasons, and a level above 250 means it is likely to be inflammatory bowel disease, which means you need to be referred to have further investigations.  There is more information about this here.

As you said, you are waiting for a scope.  We are hearing from lots of people that they are waiting longer than 2 weeks for these tests.  Unfortunately lots of departments are experiencing staff shortages which means people are having to wait longer than usual.  It can be very difficult waiting for tests, this time can make people feel even more worried and anxious and imagine all sort of results.  Some people find that it helps to keep busy.

You mentioned you have been doing your own research. Searching the internet for information can sometimes make people feel more worried as there can be a lot of unreliable information out there.  Try to stick to sites which have evidence based information on them, such as the NHS website.

I hope this is helpful and that you get your scope very soon.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You might like to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
