2 years HPV and trying for a baby?

I've had 2 years of positive HPV, no abnormal cells so my next smear is due April next year.

We wanted to try for a baby in the new year, are we silly for suggesting this?

Should I wait another 6 months-a year to have another smear test and see if I have HPV for the 3rd year running?

If I fall pregnant is this an issue? Will the HPV last year have developed into something bad?

I'm a worrier but I want to at the same time live our life, I put off having a family from having these positive tests a year ago, I don't know whether to put it off longer and wait for another smear or just see what happens.

We are 35 soon and aware not getting any younger.

  • Hello and thanks for your post

It’s usually fine to start trying for a baby and a future smear test can be done 12 weeks after giving birth. If you find out that you are pregnant do let the midwife know that your last smear result was positive for HPV.

As you probably know when you have HPV and no abnormal cells then you are normally seen in a year for another smear to check if the HPV is gone .If you get this result 3 times in a row, you will be invited to colposcopy for more tests where they will be able to look at your cervix in more detail.

Normally your immune system clears the HPV virus but this can sometimes take a couple of years and in some cases a little bit longer. It does help if you are not a smoker as this sometimes makes it harder to clear the virus.

You could also discuss planning for a baby with your colposcopist or GP . They will have your results and will be able to advise you more.

I hope this helps. Give us a ring if  you would like to talk things over.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind Regards,
