Possible bowel cancer

I'm so frightened I can hardly sleep

i had a change in bowel movement (going in the night and consistency) had a calproctin test came back poss IBS

In July I saw blood in my poo. Had 3 positive home pharmacy tests so went to GP. Had normal blood tests and 2 normal FIT tests.

Since Sept I've had intermittent blood in poo (red); daily bloating and lower abdominal ache. I now have ache up my bottom esp when sitting.

I've gone private and had a CT scan but waiting results and I'm just beyond myself. I've not lost much weight or notice being tired except from that I'm up all night worrying and crying

  • Hi Flat79 and thanks for getting in touch.

It does sound like you are having a very stressful time at the moment.

You said you have had some FIT tests and blood tests done and these were normal.  The home pharmacy tests and the FIT tests are used to detect small amounts of blood in your poo.  As you said you were seeing blood in your poo it would make sense that the tests you did from the pharmacy were positive.

I know all these symptoms can sound very worrying and they are having a big impact on your life.  But try to remember that they can be caused by other things, not just cancer.

As you said, you have had a CT scan and are waiting for the results.  Lots of people find this time makes them feel even more worried and anxious and imagine all sort of results.  Some people find that it helps to keep busy.

I wonder if you have spoken to your GP about how anxious you are feeling and whether this is something that affects you all the time.  They will be able to support you with this.  You may also like to have a look at Anxiety UK and Every Mind Matters.

These websites offer ideas to support people living with anxiety and can help you to manage how you are feeling.

I hope this is helpful and that you get your CT results very soon.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You might like to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

  • Thank you for getting back to me. I had the results today of the CT scan and came back clear except for 2 small polyps. I am thrilled but also confused where the blood came from (multiple times) and why I have stomach ache :/

  • I had a ct scan and it came back normal and didnt mention polys or anything else which is a good sign Im hoping?

  • Hello and thanks for posting

It's good to hear that your CT scan was normal and showed no evidence of polyps. This is good news and your doctor will usually confirm this to.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
