Waiting for results after total hysterectomy

I'm awaiting my biopsy results after a total hysterectomy after I had tumours on both ovaries- the operation took a lot longer than the consultant predicted and he said the tumours looked like cauliflowers - he thinks they are borderline tumours but they also has some other features so i totally confused! Something called papillary tumours?? I've also had a biopsy of the omentum??
I had health insurance so I haven't been on the nhs pathway and I feel a bit disadvantaged because of this!
I don't have appointment for another 2 weeks and that seems ages to have to wait! Would they call if they get cancer results before the appointment??
they also took a biopsy from my

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your recent surgery and can only imagine that waiting for the results must be unsettling for you.

Unfortunately it will only be the histology and biopsy reports that can say for sure what these tumours are and if this is indeed a cancer whether more treatment is needed.

Ovarian tumours will either be benign (not cancer), borderline ( not cancer but may contain pre-cancerous cells that if left may turn into cancer) or malignant (meaning cancer). Papillary tumours usually aren't cancer but when they look at these under the microscope they will be able to confirm for sure what is going on.

The omentum is a fatty lining that covers the organs in the pelvis area and sometimes this is removed or a biopsy sample during a hysterectomy where they are checking every part to see if everything is okay.

It isn't uncommon for results to take a good couple of weeks to come in so try not to read too much into waiting times.

Sit tight for now and keep your mind on other things whilst you wait.

I hope all work out okay for you but do get back in touch if needed or give us a call on 0808 800 4040 Monday-Friday 9-5.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
