Another health issue I need help with!

Hi, this is my first post so please forgive me if I get things wrong.

I went to the GP last Wednesday as I was bleeding, post menopausal, age 56. and very heavy bleeding alot of pain. She got me an appointment for blood tests, a scan and to see a Gynaecologist quickly all within the last couple of days. I had some samples taken today and have been asked to have a camera internally on Friday AM. urgently.  She says that I am bleeding heavily (i know that) my endometrial lining is very thick 9mm??? and has now worried me.

I was in so much pain today and have been getting worse for the last 13 days. In 2020 I was diagnosed with a brain tumour so am quite anxious. Can anyone tell me why she couldn't see anything, or the internal scan either.?

Having more blood tests tomorrow. Thank you for your patience.

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I’m sorry you’re worried about some recent post menopausal bleeding. The NHS have written some information about the possible causes of post menopausal bleeding and you can read more about this by clicking here. It sounds like the consultant took some biopsies to see what comes up, but a hysteroscopy  is still necessary to take a better look inside the womb, and I see you are having this procedure tomorrow.

It’s possible that you may have a condition called endometrial hyperplasia.  This is when the cells in the womb lining build up and the lining becomes thickened. Endometrial hyperplasia is a benign (non cancerous) condition, but if left untreated, it may slightly increase the risk of developing womb cancer.  But this increase in risk is generally quite low and most women with endometrial hyperplasia would not develop womb cancer. If the thickened lining also contains abnormal cells, this is called atypia, then the risk of womb cancer is higher. You can read more about this condition on the 'Patient' website at this link.

Hyperplasia can often be treated successfully with the female hormone Progestin/and or the Mirena coil. This is explained in the highlighted link above. Sometimes if there is atypia the specialist may discuss the possibility of a hysterectomy,

I know waiting when to find out more is stressful but hopefully you will know more about your situation soon. Give us a ring if you want to talk things through. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
