Lump on left testicle

I understand that lumps and bumps on testicles are not that uncommon and more often than not, these are due to cysts or varicose viens etc.

I had an ultrasound done last week Wednesday. The person performing the test said they couldn't see anything, and I assumed all was okay. However, I received a call from the hospital on the Friday saying that a Doctor at the hospital wanted to speak to me regarding the scan/results. The appointment is for this Friday, 9 days after the ultrasound was done. Is this normal, i.e., is this just the Doctor calling me in to explaining that they haven't detected anything? Or is this something to be concerned about? I ask as a friend had exactly the same issue a month ago. The person conducting the ultrasound told him nothing was detected and he never heard anything from anyone thereafter.

Also, if this is not cancerous, what is the typical recommendation for a vaicose vein or cyst? Just leave it? Or are further tests recommended? Thanks

  • Hi Carrspaints and thanks for posting.

It sounds like you have been having a worrying time.

When you have an ultrasound it would normally be a doctor who would call you with the results.  The images from the scan that you have had would need to be looked at by a specialist before you are given the results. So it is quite normal for there to be a delay before you hear about them.

Varicose veins and cysts in the testicles are quite common.  If they are not causing any symptoms such as pain then they can normally be left alone.  Your doctor should be able to tell you more when you have your appointment on Friday.

Waiting for test results can be stressful for many people, and it is easy to imagine all sorts of things in the time before the appointment.  Some people find it helps to keep busy to distract themselves.

I hope this is useful.  You might like to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,
