Information

Hi, I've been given antibiotics for a breast infection but I wasn't told what kind of infection, I haven't had any kids etc so I'm doubtful it's mastitis? My only symptoms are pain and i can feel lumps...it's not hot or swollen on the outside!

The gp said she could feel a long swollen tube. I've read up about infections you can get when you haven't had kids/breastfeeding but there's too much info and it's confusing me. I'm on the last day of antibiotics and I'm still feeling pain and now I have a pain sensation in my nipple that I didn't before? I'm starting to get worried because I've had the pain for months it was only by chance she felt inflammation when I went in.
could it be a deep abscess that needs draining?
I'm driving myself mad! Thinking the worse!

any help or advice please!

  • Hello Hollie and thank you for posting.

Really the only person who can help or advise you is your GP. They assessed you and prescribed the antibiotics so, now that you have finished the course it is best to let them know of the problems you are still experiencing.

I know you are concerned about cancer, but there are other things that can cause problems within the breast. I've placed a link here that talks through some of them, but let the GP know of your breast cancer worries.

Take care, and hopefully you will know more soon.

  • Thanks for the reply! I've been to my gp today and she said the swelling has gone down but she can feel a hard lump where she could feel the swollen tube like lump last week. I'm on another week of antibiotics and I've been referred to the breast clinic.
