ovarian cyst doubled in size in 12 weeks

3 months ago I got an ultrasound because I was getting pain on my right ovary. They found an ovarian cyst measuring 3cm. They booked me in for a repeat scan 3 months later.
I had the scan last Monday and they have found that the cyst has now doubled in size. They have booked me in for an urgent referral to gynaecology.

They’ve said it’s a hemorrhagic cyst and there’s a small amount of fluid around the cyst.

If it’s doubling in size in 12 weeks (now measuring 6cm), and has fluid around it, does this mean it’s cancerous?

I'm really scared and only 25 :(

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear that you are going through investigations and the worry that it is causing you. I can imagine how unsettling it must be for you at the moment.

It is rare for ovarian  cysts to be cancerous before the menopause so try if you can not to think the worst. It is really only the gynaecologists who can review your scans and perhaps arrange other tests  who will be able to tell you more. Try if you can not to think too far ahead, stay away from google which is general and does not take in to account your young age.

You may be interested in reading the information written by RCOG (Royal College of Gynaecologists) about ovarian cysts before the menopause here

I do hope that you know more about your situation soon. If you feel that it would be helpful to ring and chat to one of the helpline nurses then you are very welcome to do so. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are here Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

    All the Best,

  • Hi try not to read dr Google as they only give worst cases, I'm nearly 70 and last year had ovarian cysts found during a colonoscopy for left sided pain and bowel changes. They were 6cm and 4cm complex solid and didn't get smaller over 3 months, l went to gynaecology oncology clinic and after scans and blood tests they were removed

l also had extensive adhesions from previous surgery caesarean and hysterectomy, They took multiple biopsies as lm so much older and after 5 weeks l was relieved to be told that they were benign.
As a younger woman I would be reassured that even if they decide to take a look or remove a overy the chances of cancer are pretty low.
my daughter had a 15cm cyst removed when she was 16 weeks pregnant she looked as if she was having twins, it was the size of a large grapefruit and full of fluid.  It was benign when tested. there was a danger of losing the baby she went on to have a baby boy at 32 weeks he was fine.
Gyneacolgy were really nice and they will be able to guide you on the next step and if it's likely to require removal or it will resolve

Do take someone to clinic if you need to so they can listen to the doctor as we forget all we should ask as soon as we step into their room. Make a list before you go it's helpful.

    Take Care
