How to manage symptoms?

Hi, I hope your well and having a nice day so far.

I'm currently going through a possible diagnosis. I've got Lupus but new symptoms have come up and my doctor thinks it may be something occuring along with the Lupus.

I'm just wondering if you have any tips on managing symptoms. I've got weight loss and my clothes are now baggy, jewellery falls off and my face looks pale and thin. I feel self conscious about it and hide under my hood when I go out.

I'm getting a lot of nausea and drinking isn't a problem but I'm off my food now. I'm not sure what's best to eat.

Also can you explain about fevers. Because when I take my temperature it's usually 36.2 or somewhere between there and 35.6 is that a fever? My chest and back always feel hot. I'm going to say to my nurse but I want to explain it properly.

And last how do I manage night sweats? I find them uncomfortable and a little embarrassing. They happen all the time and it's disturbing my sleep so I'm feeling more tired during the day.

And if I am diagnosed with cancer which it looks like I might be should I tell my family and if I do what's the best way to do it?

I don't want to worry my family but I also don't want to keep them in the dark. They know I'm poorly again and it's something other than Lupus but I've not said what it might be yet. I'm not really sure how to say.

Thanks so much. Hopefully it's not cancer but I have been referred to a specialist so it's looking like it might be. But I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear you have lupus and the other symptoms you are experiencing at the moment must be a worry for you.

Try and take things one step at a time for now and try not to over think things until you have seen the specialist and know more.

Symptoms as you will be aware can be caused by lots of different things and most won't be cancer. The doctor will assess your symptoms to decide what tests may be needed to give a better picture about what may be going on.

In the meantime try and look after yourself the best you can. People who don't have much appetite or are feeling sick are best to manage this by eating small meals little and often.

Whilst it is important to try and eat a healthy and balanced diet as much as possible do listen to your body and eat what you fancy as well just to make sure you are eating something to keep up your energy levels. If you are struggling to get the calories you need you could try some supplement drinks high in calories and protein.

A high temperature is usually considered above 38 degrees.

Hot sweats can be really unpleasant, try and keep the temperature of your bedroom cooler and make sure your bed clothing are made of natural breathable materials to keep you cool.

As I say most people referred to specialist even with a suspected cancer won't go on to be diagnosed with cancer so at the moment you just need to tell your family you are having some tests. Until you know more it is important to not let your mind run away with itself as this may cause increased anxiety and worry that may make your symptoms worse.

I hope you know more soon but do get back anytime.

    Take care

    Naomi

  • Hi Naomi thank you so much for answering my questions yesterday. I'm sorry there were so many but you've been a big help and I've noted down everything you said.

I try to not let my head run away with thoughts and my doctor hasn't said a lot but she has said about a biopsy in my throat and that worries me. That and my other symptoms scare me a little. I'm so eager to go to Google but I don't want to scare myself even more so I'm trying not to.

Thanks for the advice with eating. I'll give it a try and hopefully it will make it a bit more comfortable for me. Lately I've been having small amounts of everything and only plain stuff, nothing too exciting or full of too much.

The sudden intense feelings of heat at night are horrible. I keep getting this it's what woke me up this morning. I used my fan tonight but I'm wondering if my bedding is too thick and airless? I might have to get new and see if that helps me.

I'll try not to let my mind run away and let the anxiety grow. It's weird how anxiety can make symptoms worse it triggers the Lupus sometimes. I don't understand how it does that.

I'll be doing online Christmas shopping this week so I'm excited for that and it will keep me busy.

Thank you for answering my questions and putting my mind at ease.

    You take care to.
