Melanoma

Seven years ago after several biopsies it was found that I had malignant melanoma in my left arm. They removed  a further section of  material and after further analysis I was given all  clear. Now, I have noticed a red spot about 5mm across on top of old scarring. The earliest gp appointment is a couple of weeks away and I am worried it may have returned.

  • I would contact your previous dermatology department and explain the situation. They may find a way of seeing you without a GP referral or they may tell you to tell your GP that they advise you to receive an earlier appointment so you can be referred quicker. Failing that, keep ringing your GP to try and get an earlier appointment. Sometimes we have to pester to get seen, especially with a history of melanoma. Good luck and please let us know how you get on.

  • Many thanks for your response,

    Mike.

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear you were treated for melanoma in the post and can understand how this red spot is concerning you.

You have done the right thing arranging an appointment with your GP to get this looked at. As AngieT said you could try and contact the dermatology department directly to see if they can but as it has been a while they may wish the GP to refer you to them if necessary.

Easier said than done but try not to overly worry and take this one step at a time. Remember there could be other reasons for this other than the cancer returning so wait and see what the GP has to say.

I appreciate waiting and not knowing can be unsettling so you might want to see if you can get an earlier appointment by calling up the surgery again and explaining your situation to see if the doctor can see you sooner.

I hope you know more soon and everything is okay for you.

    Take care

    Naomi

  • Hi Naomi,
