Thyroid Surgery advice

Hi everyone,

I am new to this forum and just wanted some advice relating to upcoming surgery , I am quite nervous around.... I've had a Thyroid Goitre for around 11 years, developed through pregnancy from a small lump the Gps and my Endo Team had been monitoring and I was diagnosed with Hashimotos and put on Levothyroxine 75Mcgs. It is noticeable left side and over the years it hasnt bothered me too much I am very fit and active. However , the last year its started to swell more then settle, then swell again and I'm my mid 40s and its pressing on neck. CT shows its mild compression of airway and slight trachael deviation ( not substernal all in neck) so its time it comes out , I also started to suffer strange anxiety symptoms which the Surgeon said , can happen with goitres and she said its around 10cm ( which frightened me when i realised it was that big)  Im scheduled for surgery the 5th for a Partial Thyroidectomy and i havent had a biopsy so this will be done at surgery to determine if cancer. The surgery when risks of bleeding and calcium issues were explained terrified me....and i'm honestly hoping i don't have a panic attack going down to theatre. Can i ask the forum are the risks of bleeding higher with a larger gland removal and calcium issues? Also has anyone been through similar and offer any advice on how you feel after. Ive children and single parent so just abit worried about recovery time etc. Any advice appreciated.

  • Hi Letsgo1 and thanks for posting,

I'm sorry to hear that you are having such a worrying time.  Lots of people feel overwhelmed when they are coming up to having surgery, it can be a very anxious time, especially when you also have the uncertainty of a biopsy being done to determine if there are any cancer cells.

It would be good to have another conversation with your surgeon about the risks of bleeding and calcium issues, as they know the details of your conditions and everything that has happened leading up to surgery, rather than asking anyone on this forum.  There may also be a specialist nurse that you can talk to about this who may be able to offer you some helpful information.

You might like to look here which gives you lots of information about recovering from a thyroidectomy and what to expect.

It is completely understandable that you will feel nervous, and I can't tell you not to worry but hopefully this information will help a little.  There are also some ideas here about managing anxiety before you go to hospital.

Please get back to us if you would like any more information. You might like to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take Care

    Rachel

  • Hi Rachel, thanks for your response.

The surgeon has advised the risks and as long as I am happy with them. The operation needs done as the gland pressing on lots of things it shouldnt be. They are also concerned they cant see my laryngael nerve on CT so , its really when they go in trying to see how to save it , as best as possible.
