  • Hi, sorry no advice but did you have any other symptoms? I've had hpv 3 years now with no abnormal cells but have been badly breathless and have swollen lymph nodes all down the left of my neck and fatigue, normally quite prone to tonsillitis as well, awaiting my biopsy results which my consultant has reviewed and sent to another hospital x

  • Hi Glamma and thanks for posting,

It sounds like you have been having a difficult time. I'm sorry to hear that you are still suffering from a very dry mouth and this is having a big impact on your life.

Some people find that these changes gradually improve after treatment but unfortunately others find that the changes are permanent.

Many people find that their saliva changes, and their mouth is drier after they have had treatment for tonsil cancer.  Rinsing your mouth regularly and gargling can help with managing this. Your head and neck team can give you advice on what type of mouth rinse to use.

There is some information here about coping with a dry mouth and things that can make it feel more comfortable.  Some people find chewing sugar free gum, or sucking sugar free sweets gives them some relief.

I wonder if you have some support around you, maybe from your specialist nurse, or perhaps they could direct you to a local group. It is hard getting used to changes after cancer treatment and it can be useful having others to talk to in a similar situation, or someone who is outside your friend and family group.  Many hospitals have Macmillan or Maggie's centres attached to them that can provide this.  We also have some information here about coping with life after a cancer diagnosis.

I hope this is useful, and your situation improves soon.

You might like to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take Care,

    Rachel
