Three monthly blood tests?

So I had colon cancer two years ago. T3N1M0. Had surgery followed by a year of chemo (it kept making me so ill, I had to be hospitalised twice and chemo delayed, hence why it took so long).

Anyway, I've just had my first yearly all clear but my colon cancer nurse rang me today to say they want to do 3 monthly blood tests instead of 6 and that this is a new procedure, there's nothing to worry about. Was just wondering if anyone else had heard the same? Thanks!

  • Hello Steviebird and thanks for posting,

Historically, follow up after cancer treatment has varied as there has been some uncertainty about the amount of benefit various tests confer in terms of picking up a cancer that has come back so it can be treated. Local protocols may still vary, but I think you can take what your nurse said at face value as these sorts of things do get reviewed and changed from time to time depending on the current evidence.

I am not sure if anyone else will come along and post, I hope they do, but don't let it bother you if they say something different.

Feel free to give us a ring on Freephone 0808 800 4040, we are around weekdays from 9-5.

    Best wishes,

    Julia

  • Thanks Julia. Appreciate your reply. On the positive side, I'd rather have 3 monthly check ups than 6 monthly to catch anything sooner if possible, so I guess this is a good thing.

And if someone comes along and says different, I won't let it bother me. I'm pretty sure if there was anything to be concerned about, my nurse wouldn't have kept stressing it was standard procedure now. Thank you!
