Polyp found on cervix 2 week wait

Hi,

I'm really worried and wish I would have asked the Dr more questions.

I have had heavy periods, bleeding between period and after sex and also heavy discharge for months. I went to the drs and they took some swabs for infection and STDs all were clear as expected. The Dr tried to do a cervical examination but could see my cervix due to so much discharge. So she booked me in again. The Dr today said she could see a polyp on my cervix and referred me for a colonoscopy under the cancer 2 week wait pathway.

I'm worried and don't know what to expect, could this be cervical cancer?

  • Hello.

I have had a similar experience and would like to know how your scan goes.

I have been having heavy periods, backache, pain during sex with nausia and adominal pain and a musky water like discharge.

I went to the doctors where she spotted two polyps and scar tissue. When she pressed on my tummy it was really painful also.

I haven't stopped thinking about it since, I read that polyps are mostly benign but it's still a terrifying experience.

I have an internal pelvic scan on the 2nd December, and they've booked me in for an ultrasound.

Write back on here when you get your results if you don't mind and let me know how it goes, it would be good to hear from someone going through the same thing. I can do the same for you if my appointment is sooner than yours. Good luck

  • I have been for the intern ultrasound back in March, it's not painful, hope everything goes ok for you.

I am worried because this is a colonoscopy so I think the procedure will be more invasive plus I'm worried that it could be cancer as I'm on the 2 week wait pathway.

  • Oh my so you have been dealing with this since march, that's scary!

Yeah I saw my doctor two days ago and got the urgent two week appointment, but luckily it's only a week's wait. Two weeks feels an awful long time to wait.

Hopefully the colonoscopy will help see everything more clearly.

Did they mention maybe removing your polyp or doing a biopsy with the colonoscopy?

Let me know how it goes for you. Do you have a date yet?

  • Hi

Is it not a colposcopy you'll be having if you have a cervical polyp? A colonoscopy is a bowel examination

  • Yes it's a colposcopy I've been referred to under 2 week wait, the Dr said she has seen a polyp and has referred me for them to check it she didn't say anything about removal and I didn't ask any questions as I wasn't really thinking straight after she said 2 week refferal under the cancer pathway.

  • Ah, I was confused when you mentioned colonoscopy in your other posts. The two week wait will mean you are seen quicker but doesn't necessarily mean cancer-most cervical polyps are benign, but they will need to be sure it is a polyp before considering removal.

It wouldn't be removed at the colposcopy-they are more likely to want to take a biopsy first. I hope it turns out to be a simple polyp for you.

  • Hello sbrown12 and thanks for posting,

It is rare for a cervical polyp to turn out to be cancer so I think this would be very unlikely.  Most often, cervical polyps are benign (non cancerous) growths. They can cause troublesome symptoms which can be sorted out by removing them. Then they can then be sent to the laboratories to be checked out.

I think your doctor will have arranged a colposcopy which is a close examination of the cervix. This is done in an outpatient colposcopy clinic. It is often possible to remove polyps at the same time, (this isn't usually painful), but I can't be sure if this will happen on the day in your case. It might depend on the shape and size of the polyps.

I can appreciate that being referred on the 2 week pathway is unsettling, but once tests are done, by far the majority of urgent referrals aren't cancer, so try and keep an open mind and distract yourself as much as you can.
