from sylvia

  • The stoma nurse told me to put Ronnie on full fat milk last week so he is having 3 cups of full fat milk for his coffee and tea and cerial. He is eating a bit more but not very much so i will have a talk to the distric nurse when she comes to do his blood next week

  • Hello Susie i wonder if you have ever had a problem with the stoma night bag filling with air threw the night. Ronnie said it is getting half full of the usual then the rest of the bag is air. I am wondering if it is because he is hungry when he goes to bed or he is breathing in air threw his mouth while he is asleep. Any ideas. Thankyou from Sylvia

  • I've not heard of air inflation of bags maybe the stoma nurse has a remedy.
Is the connection making good contact with the bag?.
    Take care

  • It's extremely common, depending on what you've been drinking, for example fizzy drinks can cause it. If the bag didn't have a good connection it would leak. It can help to have a little liquid in the night bag before connecting to the urostomy bag. Have you got any type of stoma Alfiestar?

  • What do you mean what type of stoma he does have a stoma  called an ileum and he has a ileostomy bag

    Sylvia

  • Sylvia, I was asking Alfiestar if she had a stoma because she had never heard of bags inflating and I found that very odd as it's a common thing to happen with a night bag for urine.

i know Ronnie has a stoma, but losing your bladder results in a urostomy, so now I'm curious why he is wearing an ileostomy bag, which is what you use with an ileostomy when you lose your bowel and doesn't involve the use of a night bag.

I'm aware that the urostomy is formed from the ileum since I've had one for such a long time myself, but the stoma itself is not called an ileum.

  • Sorry i must hav ben confused so here goes. Ronnie had a radical cystectomy. He lost his bladder and his prostate x lymph nodes. He has a bag from his stomach through the day and a night bag for during the night. The day bag which he calls Fred is fine no problems at all. But the night baf half fills with urine and then air. So because of this the urine is not going into the night bag it is collecting into his day bag. So he has been getting up during the night and emptying Fred. I have bought him another night bag stand because we had to wait over a week for one to be delivered and the hospital didn't have one to bring home so he used my mop bucket for nearly 2 week.. He has started to use both night bags because of the day bag filling up. Hope that makes sence to you.

  • Sylvia, I understand completely what Ronnie has had done. I know what a cystectomy is because I've had my bladder removed too and I use a night bag for drainage from the "day" bag.

What I am saying is that it is common for the night bag to fill with air, along with urine and it can depend on what Ronnie has been drinking in the day. Also it depends on the tubing from the urostomy bag to the night bag, it can get twisted. I put the night bag on the stand, and move it a bit of distance away from the bed to try to ensure the flow is unrestricted. As I said in my reply to Alfiestar, leaving a little bit of liquid in the night bag can help so that there is not a vacuum created in the night bag.

I quite often use a bucket for my bag, that's something else people commonly do-it doesn't have to be on a stand. Sometimes when my nightstand has broken and I'm waiting for a new one, I just put the night bag in a waste bucket or pail. This also saves the floor if there is any leakage from the bag. It's really not an issue using a bucket instead of a stand.

I wasn't sure what you meant when you said he was using both night bags though?

  • firstly Ronnie doesnt drink anything fizzy drinks at all. He only drinks orange juice tea coffee and water. He doesnt drink beer or spirits. He wakes up half way through the night and changes onto a second night bag because the first one is full of air and filling his Fred. So he puts his fred onto another empty night bag so he can go back to sleep and not worry about Fred filling up. He always lets a bit of urine from Fred into the night bag before he attached Fred to the night bag.

    Hope this makes sence

  • Ah, yes-I understand what you mean now. The thing is, you're  always going to have air come out of a urostomy. Diet can affect it, eating vegetables which produce wind,or swallowing air, eating gum. It's a shame he has to wake up and change the bag. I do get frequent nights when the night bag blows up like a balloon, and urine can stay in the tube, so I understand what's happening, but it's never been bad enough to make me get up and empty or change the bag.
