Recalled after first mammogram

Hi I've been recalled to have further tests after my first mammogram, this has been the worst weekend of my life, I'm 52 also going through menopause. My anxiety is through the roof. I can't think of anything else, apart from the worse.

  • I was also recalled after my first mammogram and then after my third as well and I remember the anxiety well. At the breast clinic you will probably have another mammogram (remember no spray deodorant that day) - a bigger machine that gives better images. You might also get an ultrasound and possibly then a biopsy. At my clinic it was done in stages - mammogram, waiting room then either sent home or onto the ultrasound.  My husband came with me and sat in the waiting room and told me afterwards that several women were seen and given good news and sent home. I got the works - mammogram, ultrasound, chat with consultant, biposy and an appointment for the following week for results. It turned out to be calcifications and benign.

After I was recalled the next time I think I was even more worried, thinking perhaps that they had got it wrong but my experience was very different. The mammogram had shown a 'mass' very deep in the breast tissue but they thought it was a cyst. I was sent straight to ultrasound, was confirmed and drained. I was in the clinic less than 15 mins.

So please be reassured that being recalled does not necessarily mean bad news. I'll wish you luck and hope your visit goes smoothly and that you get your results (all ok) quickly

  • Thank you so so much from your quick reply. I'm totally freaking out.
you have put my mind at ease a little.so thank you.

so glad that it was good news for you.

  • Hello there Mctaggs and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear you have been recalled after your first mammogram and appreciate how worried you must be, but please try and take things one step at a time for now.

As leni56 has so helpfully said many people are recalled and for lots of these women the cause of the abnormality on the image will be something other than cancer, such as a cyst, fibroadenoma or calcifications.

Waiting for further tests and not knowing what the outcome will be is understandably very unsettling but try and hold your nerve for now.

Keeping busy and your mind on other things can be helpful at times like this, so do try and fill your time if you can.

I hope everything will be okay for you.

Do get back if you have more questions or you are very welcome to give one of the nurses a call on 0808 800 4040 weekdays 9-5.

    Take care

    Naomi

  • Thank you so much Naomi, I've just got home, I've had another mammogram today and some scans. But they have also done a biopsy on my boob and under my arm. I have to wait 2 weeks for the results. But I really appreciate to both replying to me. Thank you again
