Had my endometrial biopsy today

Feeling really sad , because they thought it was a polyp, it's 22mm the endometrium and now I am waiting 2-3 weeks for results.

Do they take any of the thickness away or just take a biopsy ?

I'm now worried because it means I still have to deal with the bleeding , so no futher ahead just more worry .

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear you are currently undergoing some tests and understand the waiting and not knowing what is going on alongside having troublesome symptoms can be a worry.

When the womb lining is thickened it is often called endometrial hyperplasia. Endometrial hyperplasia is a benign ( non cancerous) condition caused by a hormone imbalance of too much oestrogen and not enough progesterone often when a woman is going through or has been through the menopause.

To confirm endometrial hyperplasia a biopsy ( sample of cells from the womb lining) is taken and looked at under a microscope. This is only a sample of cells so unfortunately the majority of the thickening will remain after this test is carried out.

The biopsy will either show benign endometrial hyperplasia with no abnormal cells which often will resolve by itself, although hormonal treatment involving progesterone is often advised to manage any symptoms and follow up arranged to monitor the situation.

If abnormal pre cancerous cells are detected then there is a high risk that in time these will turn into cancer. Because of this risk surgery is usually recommended however in the rare situation when a patient is younger and wishes to retain their fertility hormonal treatments are used to manage the condition, until a time when surgery can be carried out.

Hopefully you will know more about your situation soon and what needs to happen next for you.

Wishing you all the best but do get back if you have more questions. You are also welcome to call the nurse helpline 9-5 weekdays on 0808 800 4040 if you prefer.

    Take care

    Naomi

  • Hi, thank you for the reply , I am grateful for your help :)

  • Hiya, I've been on this pathway, after my biopsy I was called 10 days later, hoping urs is earlier as the waiting is a nightmare. Have u had any mri or ct or just a biopsy

  • Hi I had a hysterecopy, endometrial biopsy on December 2nd , still no results. The surgeon did say 2 weeks but patience isn't my viture. Then I thought oh it will arrive soon , it's because of the postal strikes. I've been checking the online portal... Nothing.

Today I took the bold move of calling gyno and asking. Although no answer I did get my surgeons telephone number and extension.

I totally get it , I just want answers because if clear I can start investigation into bladder. As I originally went into hospital passing blood not knowing where from, this thickening was the first thing they found. But as I keep getting infections.

Good luck my love have a good Christmas. I guess we'll know soon.
