After effects of LLETZ

I had a LLETZ procedure 9 days ago and despite some initial bleeding/watery discharge for the first couple of days, I've mainly had a watery yellow discharge since (with dark brown/black grains which I also had after the initial biopsy) and I understand is normal and hasn't caused any concern or pain. Yesterday afternoon I noticed that the discharge was a little pinker when wiping but for the most part it was still yellow on the pad. Last night I went to the toilet and when wiping I found an orange mucus lump of goo (sorry for that detail!) and much darker charcoal-like lumps with this which was different to the dark brown/black grains I've had. I haven't had anything like this since but I did wake up with very mild cramps for about an hour in the night. This morning I went about my day as normal and this afternoon my discharge on the pad was still yellow my but when I wiped at the toilet it was pinker than yesterday. I've just changed before bed and this time my pad was no longer yellow but full of the pale pink discharge instead and when I wiped it was pinker than previously. Is this normal and part of the healing process?

I should add that it doesn't smell at all really and I haven't had any cramps today. I also wasn't sure if this could also potentially be breakthrough bleeding although I haven't had a period in 9 years or any breakthrough bleeding in years either. I did take a little time to heal from the initial biopsy too as I had the after effects of that for around 3 weeks so not sure if it's also just my body being slow at healing! I'm not sure if I should also be changing my pad more frequently too or not as I'm currently changing every 4-5 hours which seems to work for the fluid build up in the pad - it's been a long time since I've had to deal with pads like this!

I don't really want to call my GP on Monday as they aren't particularly helpful (I called them for my results of the initial biopsy at the first colposcopy and was told it was at the GP's discretion as to whether they'd call me back and inform me of the results - this was over a month ago and still haven't had a call from them to inform me. Luckily I called the clinic directly and a nurse called me back to inform me of the results and the follow up procedure as I didn't receive a results letter!). So any advice would be amazing!

  • Hi it was a few years ago since i had the LETZ.  We were due due go on holiday days after and they offered to re schedule. We decided to go ahead and still go on holiday but the condition was no sex or swimming. I was also advised to stock up on a antibiotics, my doctor agreed and prescribed the strongest as a precautionary just in case. On the plane i started with the pink stuff and then over a couple of days i started flooding. Phoned the hospital who did the letz and the nurse said start taking antibiotics. That evening the bleeding stopped and I felt better than ever. Just call the hospital who did ghe letz for advice.

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear you needed to have LLETZ treatment and appreciate it can be difficult to know what is and isn't normal after treatment.

As you are aware it is normal to experience some discharge and bleeding after this procedure that can continue for 4 weeks for some people. Due to a scab forming from the treatment to remove the abnormal cells in the cervix this can sometimes bleed and some notice the bleeding to become heavier from about day 10.

There is more information about the possible side effects and complications here so do take a look. However if you notice a change in colour or odour to the discharge do get in touch with your doctor in case you are developing an infection that needs treating.

I hope this helps but do get back in touch if you wish.

    All the best

    Naomi

  • That's great - Thank you for the reassurance! I thought that I may have passed the scab or irritated it so I'm glad that this is normal and can happen!
