Query p16

Hi I recently had a biopsy done on my cervix. Results said p16 negative. Is that good or bad and can you explain what that means?

Thanks :)

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am a bit confused by your question. When you have a smear (pap) test at your GP's the sample is first tested for HPV( Human papilloma Virus) and then if this is negative then no further tests are done. If your sample is HPV positive then you are normally invited to a colposcopy clinic to have your cervix looked at in more detail and sometimes a biopsy is taken. There are many different strains of HPV and it is the high risk strains 16 and 18 that are linked to cervical cancer.  You can read more about the HPV virus here

Because you say that your p16 is negative you may be describing your smear test being negative so no further tests are required but I may be wrong. If you want to ring and chat through your results then you are more then welcome to ring and we can try and see if we can help you more.

If you want to ring us our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are open 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

  • Thanks for your reply

I should have made myself clearer

I had a Smear and my results were ASCUS

I went for a colposcopy then and had a biopsy of abnormal cells.

They tested the cells for p16 immunohistochemistry and it said this was negative, do you know what that means? Is it good or bad

    Thanks

  • Hello Anxietyworried and thanks for getting back to us,

As far as I know p16 immunohistochemistry testing is an additional assessment in cervical screening that can be sometimes used to add to the picture when things aren't clear cut. You probably know that ACUS means atypical cells of undetermined significance and that high risk HPV infections can potentially cause cell changes that could over time possibly change further and develop into cancer. A negative p16 test is a good thing as it is a protein that is found in low levels in healthy cells, but try and get in touch with the colposcopy clinic for confirmation, knowing all your details, they will be able to explain things in context.

Give us a call if you want to talk anything over on Freephone 0808 800 4040, we are around weekdays 9-5.

    Best wishes,

    Julia
