Radiotherapy (oesophageal cancer)

Did anyone suffer with breathlessness from radiotherapy? We saw my mums consultant today after her session for a review and they did all the checks to confirm it’s just a normal side effect and not an infection but she is really struggling with it. Barley sleeping and can't even do basic activities. She's completed 4/5 of her treatments. It is oesophageal cancer with mets to lymph nodes and lungs T4N2M1. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi Emily2022 and thanks for posting.

I'm sorry to hear that your mum is struggling with breathlessness.  It is useful that she has seen the consultant and he has ruled out an infection.

Breathlessness will usually improve after the radiotherapy has finished, but while it lasts it is a difficult thing to deal with.  There are some things that your mum can try which could make things a little easier for her.

We have some information on our website about coping with breathlessness, and exercises that she can use.

You have posted in the 'Ask the nurses' section of our website. You may find that more people will respond and share their ideas if you post this in another section too.

I hope this is helpful, please get back to us if you would like any more information.

You may like to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care

    Rachel
