Dry Mouth During/After Chemo

Hello!

My husband is being treated for bowel cancer and he was taken off chemo for a few weeks because he became ill through his 4th cycle of Oxaliplatin and Capecitabine (CAPOX). At his last oncology appointment he had fluid retention in his ankles. The oncologist gave his legs an examination and said his legs were slightly swollen suggesting fluid retention but still has strength in them ( he can still get up and walk about). The oncologist then gave him a one week course of diuretics to take to get rid of the fluid these have been working but he has a very dry mouth because of this. He had a phone call on Tuesday from the urologist who said his kidneys are slightly swollen and that he may now need a stent of nephrostomy which they said before was not required but a spread to his pelvis has suggested that this may block kidneys and prevent them from draining properly and this is why the oncologist doesn't want to put him on anymore chemo just now I think until they get this seen to. As I said, his mouth is really dry and his voice is slightly hoarse and I was wondering why his voice would sound like that? Is it anything to do with the chemo or is it the water tablets. He is drinking loads as well and this is causing him to pee a lot which- which I take is the purpose of the water tablets. His appetite has taken a back step as well because he says everything just tastes the same and sometimes drinking bottled water all the time means that he just keeps tasting plastic all the time. He eats, but very little. A few months ago he would have wolfed down his dinner at night looking for something after it now he barely finishes what is on his plate and this is a worry.

  • Hi and thanks for posting.

I am sorry to hear that your husband is having a difficult time at the moment.  It sounds like there has been a lot going on.

You asked about oxaliplatin and capecitabine and whether it can cause a dry mouth and hoarse voice.  This combination of treatment can give people a dry mouth alongside other side effects.  There is some more information about the treatment here which talks about many of the side effects people experience.  Diuretics can also cause a dry mouth.  Some people find chewing sugar free gum or sucking sugar free sweets can be helpful for this.

I have had a look to see whether these treatments could cause a hoarse voice, and there was no information about this.  Sometimes capecitabine on it's own can give people a sore throat but it doesn't mention hoarseness.  You can see the information here and here.

You said that your husband is struggling with his appetite at the moment.  People often find that treatment does effect how much they want to eat, and also how things taste.  Sometimes things that have been favourite foods for a long time no longer taste nice and it can be difficult to know what to eat. Small regular meals and snacks can mean that it is easier to manage food.  You can also get high calorie drinks which can be easier to manage.

Does your husband have a specialist nurse at the moment? It could be useful to talk through things with them, and mention the hoarseness, as they may have some ideas about it.

I hope this is helpful but please get back in touch if you have any more questions.

You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care

    Rachel

  • Thank you for the information. It is a bit difficult to describe how my husband's voice it at the minute. Reading the Oxaliplatin fact sheet it says something about tongue sensations which can lead to speech being affected and I have noticed this. His appetite as I said has waned slightly but he is still eating but only little amounts and often this is the thing that is worrying me that his appetite has dropped and as it says on the fact sheet this is also a side effect which makes me feel that bit slightly better that I'm not imagining it. He is not on chemotherapy at the moment as they are saying his kidneys need attending to so when we see the oncologist this coming Thursday we will know what is to happen once his kidneys get seen to I am assuming they will put him back on chemotherapy. Thanks again.
