MRI wait

Hi guys!

Bit of background. When I was a child I had cancer, recovered well and have been relatively healthy since thank god.

But anyway, a couple of years ago I started having trouble with my back. I can only describe it as a constant ache all the time combined with like a sharp stabbing pain that comes completely out the blue. It quite literally stops me from being able to walk properly, takes me ages to get up, it's just a massive pain in my backside. I've been given repeated painkillers for it, Codeine, Tramadol etc but it does nothing. Anyway my doctor finally refereed me for an MRI scan to try and get to the bottom of it. That was 5 weeks ago and I still haven't had the appointment through yet, what is the average wait time and is it worth phoning the doc to check on it?

Thank you all

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I'm sorry that you have been experiencing back pain for some time and can understand you wanting to find out what's causing it.

Unfortunately, there is an NHS staff shortage causing delays in processing scan results . I'm afraid we cannot tell you exactly how long you will have to wait to get your MRI results as there will be some regional variations in different NHS Trusts.

But, if you don't hear anything by next week, then do ask your GP to enquire, or ring the specialist/consultant secretary.

I hope you know more soon and that everything turns out to be okay.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
