  • Hi Danni46 and thanks for posting.

It sounds like you are having a worrying time at the moment.

Lumps in the neck are often associated with swollen lymph nodes, which happen when your body is fighting off infection and bacteria. They can often take a while to go down and return to normal afterwards, some people find that they never return to the size they were before. I'm glad your daughter's lump has already been checked out by your doctor.  GP's will see lots of these lumps and would send your daughter for further tests if they were concerned, but I understand that having a lump for this length of time can feel strange.

I think if you continue to be concerned it's good to get things looked at again and reassessed by the doctor, just to put your mind at rest if nothing else.

You mentioned your daughter had been treated for an eating disorder.  I wonder if you had seen this charity which might be somewhere you can both get some support and share experiences with people who are going through similar things.

I hope this is useful but please do get back to us if you need any more information or support.

You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

  • Hi Rachel thankyou for your reply the eating disorder team

habe decided my daughter does not fit the criteria for a eating disorder and think she has asd/ autism. My daughter focuses on certain things and for the last 8/10 months it's been healthy eating as to why I thought she was losing weight. The last 6/8 weeks my daughter as improved on her eating she eats three healthy meals a day and maybe one snack but she is continuing to lose weight and now obvious she as this lump

in her lymph node that as been there for 5 weeks with no sign of infection or nothing.

If my doctor won't send her for further investigation what can I do?

  • Hello and thank you for getting back in touch,

I am sorry to hear about your concern for your daughter.  As my colleague Rachel has said if there was a concern that something serious was causing this lump in the neck then your daughter would be sent to have a blood test and possibly a scan of her neck. However I think it is reasonable to go back to the GP if this lump doesn't get better but you might want to leave it for a while ( a few weeks) to see if this gets better by itself.  You could also ask to see a different GP for another opinion.

We are unable to say what is the matter except to say that most lumps and bumps do not turn out to be caused by cancer.

    Take care,

    Caroline
