Ovarian Cysts & Blood in Urine

Hello,

I had an ultrasound in May 2022 which showed two cysts on my right ovary, this followed a CT scan as I have been having blood in my pee and severe back pain and pelvic pain since May.

I underwent a total hysterectomy and oophorectomy at the beginning of October 2022.

My left ovary was removed and a cyst.   Previous ultrasound in June did not show any cyst on the left ovary only two mother and daughter cysts on right ovary.

Since the surgery I have continued to have severe back pain and blood in my urine.

I am worried that my right ovary and cysts are still there.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Thank you x

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I'm not sure if you also had your right ovary removed during your hysterectomy. Your doctor is the best person to clarify this for you.

A hysterectomy is quite a major operation and it can take six to eight weeks to recover from it.

Blood in the urine can have a number of causes and you can read more about this on the NHS website here.

Probably the best thing to do is to make an appointment to see your doctor. We always encourage people to see their GP if their symptoms are persisting. Doctors are trained to assess symptoms and can arrange tests if necessary to try to find out what might be going on.

Hopefully people will come along and share their experiences with you, as support like this can be invaluable. But it’s important to bear in mind that even if there are other people who have experienced similar things to you, I’m not sure that their experience will shed much light about what is going on with you.

Give us a ring if you would like to talk things over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

  • Good morning and thank you for your response,

I have an urgent scan this morning, as yesterday I was back in hospital with the same symptoms I had prior to the hysterectomy and oophorectomy I had six weeks ago.

My right ovary was left with the cysts detected in May 2022, and my left ovary removed.

I have had three different gynaecologists since December 2020, when I had my first biopsy for endometrial hyperplasia, following this I had biopsies every six months, a hystersopy and also an abnormal cervical smear and a cervical biopsy which showed CIN1.  I am 50 years old.  I was not too worried about these biopsies as I knew that the gynae department were keeping an eye on me.

The surgeon who operated on me was the fourth gynaecologist, and I had never met him before the day of the surgery.

It's highly possible that I need to have a further oophorectomy to remove the right ovary, as my symptoms are worsening.

Along with visible blood in my urine I have lower backache, pelvic pain, nausea and feeling full quickly, I can not finish a meal and I've lost a lot of weight.  I was slim anyway, but my abdomen is swollen.

My doctor believes either the wrong ovary was removed or possibly both ovaries should have been removed.

I was just wondering if it is common to have blood in your urine when you have gynaecological issues.

    Best wishes,

    Victoria

  • I have had bilateral oophrectomy  with extensive adhesions that took over  4 1/2 hrs to remove everything was stuck together on the left side, my pain was left sided. The bruising was awful five incisions and it took a while to recover but l had no blood in my urine, is that not more of a kidney type of problem. I did have a post op urine infection but they said the catheter could have caused it.
l hope they get to the bottom of your problems soon

    take care

  • Hello Victoria and thanks for getting back to us,

I am sorry to learn about the ongoing problems you are having.

I don't think it is common to have true blood in the urine (that is bleeding from a source within the urinary tract system) alongside having gynaecological conditions, however it can be tricky to be sure where bleeding is coming from. Sometimes what looks like blood in urine is bleeding from the vagina or back passage, vaginal bleeding can have a number of gynaecological causes.

Blood in the urine can be visible to the naked eye or microscopic when it can only be found on testing. Bleeding from within the urinary tract system has several possible causes. You can read about them on the NHS website at this link

I hope things improve for you soon.

If you want to talk anything over please do give us a call on Freephone 0808 800 4040, we are here from 9-5, weekdays.

    Best wishes,
