CEA levels

Hi all..

My Dad has just started his 3rd cycle of chemo, they are 9 day cycles. His CEA marker started at over 24,000 and has come down to 4,500 in 2 cycles.

I was hoping for some insight into CEA and I'm assuming this is a positive sign but is it a red herring or truly something to go by?

thank you!

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

Yes, this is usually seen as a positive sign that things are going in the right direction. The CEA is a protein that is classed as a tumour marker and can help indicate how a cancer is responding to treatment.

So if the level of CEA has reduced while someone is having chemotherapy it usually indicates that the treatment is working for now. The other way to see how a cancer is responding to treatment is to do a scan after they have had a few sessions of treatment.
