MRI scan

Hello just wondering if anyone can help. I took my son to AnE the other week as he took a knock in a football match. They done an X-ray luckily nothing broken however they did find what the described as a growth on his leg. Booked in for MRI on Sunday but have just received a follow up appointment for the following week. I'm starting to panic a little as to why they would have booked the follow up already??
Should I be worried or is this a common thing? Everywhere I look it says that they will contact you for a appointment after.

Thank you

  • Hi Bec23 and thanks for posting.

It sounds as though you are feeling worried about the scan and follow up.

A follow up appointment will usually be booked to discuss the results of the MRI scan with you and your son.  There is more information about having a MRI scan here.  The scan, once it has been done, will be looked at by a radiologist, and sometimes discussed with a team of people.  These results will then be sent to the doctor who asked for the scan.

I can't tell you why a follow up appointment has been booked already.  Each area of the UK has their own procedures so it could be that this is how things are done where you live.

Waiting for appointments and results can be really difficult. Some people find keeping themselves busy helps with how anxious they are feeling.

    I hope this is useful.

You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care
