Possible sarcoma biopsy referred to thoracics without result

Hi,

I recently had a tumor on my first rib discovered that was suspected ewings sarcoma after CT-scan and MRI. I was referred to hospital for the biopsy which I had 1 month ago now. The hospital hasn't called me once with updates but I have been contacting them to ask why there were delays. The first was that the biopsy had been sent on for more testing, the second delay was that after the MDT it was discussed in the thoracic meeting, then after being told I would receive a call again and didn't, I called the hopital and they told me I had been referred on to a different hospital's thoracics and that they would be contacting me and possibly will want to do another procedure. I spoke to the nurse, not the doctor, so they said they couldn't give me more information.

I am wondering why they would follow this process and move my referral around without giving me the result. If the biopsy had come back as cancer, would they not have told me before referring me over to the thoracic specialists? I'm really confused why this is all happening without the hospital telling me anything. It feels quite cruel being kept in the dark if it is not cancer. Could anyone please give some advice on why they might be going through this process rather than telling me what my biopsy results are (because they do have them)

Thank you very much

  • Hi Sydney55 and thanks for posting.

I'm sorry to hear that you are having a such worrying time.

I'm afraid I can't tell you why the hospital would refer you somewhere else without giving you results. Would it be possible to leave a message with the original doctor's secretary asking for them to call you to give you some information?

If you are unable to do this you might then want to speak with the hospital's Patient Advice Liaison Service (PALS).  They can offer confidential advice and support about health related matters.  They are also a point of contact for patients, families and carers.

They hopefully can look into your situation and find out more about the appointment and why a referral was made. You can contact them via the hospital's switchboard.

I hope this is helpful and you find out more soon.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Yours sincerely,

    Rachel
