Is my mole cancerous?

Hello,

I am a 26 year old woman and I've had this mole for pretty much as long as I can remember,it's about 1cm big (half an inch) and has an irregular shape to it,mostly dark brown but has a few lighter brown edges ,it has also hair growing out of it, it's on my buttocks so it hardly ever gets sun exposure. I have read about atypical moles and that most moles that have hair growing out of it are predominantly healthy, however I am scared that it's cancerous,I have booked a GP appointment but I can't help but to fear for the worst. It hasn't changed in size or colour, although I've been having more moles and tiny skin tags appear on my body recently. Is this something I should be concerned about?

Please help me as this is making me quite anxious.

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I'm afraid we can't say if your mole is anything to be worried about. Moles are common and the majority are harmless, but they should always be checked out if they change shape or colour. This does not always mean that anything serious like cancer is suspected but they should be checked just to be on the safe side.

GP's are very experienced at looking at skin conditions and moles are able to decide if someone needs further tests.

There is an ABCDE checklist that can be good to know about which you can take a look at on our website at this link.

I hope everything turns out to be okay. Give us a ring if you would like to talk things over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
