Dull ache in right leg for 6 months

Hi all, so basically i have had a dull ache/pain in my right leg, primarily in my calf for around 6 months now. It's not improving and hard to describe what it feels like, but it certainly feels different to my left leg. I can't recall any injury that may have caused it. It just came on out of nowhere but isn't that painful unless standing for a long time or when standing up after sitting or sleeping for a period of time. The Docs did blood test for blood clot which was fine. I have now been referred for Physio but i would like a scan to see if anything shows up as not sure how physio can help if i didn't injure it. Has anybody else experienced anything similar?  Forgot to say I'm a 45 year old male.

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I’m sorry you are worried about your leg pain and can appreciate that unexplained symptoms can prey on your mind.

I'm afraid no one here on Cancer Chat including the nurses can diagnose anyone. Our standard advice is to talk things over with the GP and be guided by them which you have already done.

You can ask your GP about having a scan but I don't think you can insist on one. GPs can refer patients for tests or to see a specialist if they think it’s necessary. If your GP doesn't think this is necessary, you can ask them to explain why. They might want to see how you get on with your physiotherapy as strengthening exercises can often improve leg pain.

Hopefully people will come along and share their experiences with you, as support like this can be invaluable. But it’s important to bear in mind that even if there are other people who have experienced similar things to you, I’m not sure that their experience will shed much light about what is going on with you.

I hope things settle down and do go back to your GP to discuss your symptoms again if they are not improving.

    Best wishes,

    Celene

  • Did you ever get to the bottom of what was causing this? I am going through something similar, roughly 2 1/2 months ago my lower right leg started aching, no injury or anything, just a random dull ache, it still feels the same now, hasn't gone away but hasn't really got any worse either.

As you said, its hard to explain the feeling, sometimes it feels like my calf aches, sometimes it feels deeper, it can at times feel like its my tendons aching, i get tight hamstrings etc... there is all sorts going on, seems like the ache/pain is moving around my lower right leg.

40 year old male, never had this before.

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

As the original post was from a while back I thought I would reply to you. Symptoms like aches and pains can have many different causes but when they are ongoing and without a known reason it is a good idea to get it checked out by a doctor.

Make an appointment with your GP when you can. They can assess you and run more tests if they think necessary.

Try not to worry most of the time these things are caused by something less serious than cancer.

    Best wishes
