FIT result

My Mum has had a 2nd FIT test, 1st one read over 300. She is 86 years old, suffering with diarrhoea and has lost over 2.5 stone in 6 months. It's been 3 weeks since the 2nd FIT test and we have heard nothing. Staff strongly suspect cancer but nobody is actually saying she has cancer. What test will she need to confirm a diagnosis? They are talking about discharging as she has no medical need but surely if she has got bowel cancer that is a need but just not confirmed yet. I am confused by it all and nobody seems to be talking to one another, the OT not talking to the nursing staff. Is there a specific test she needs? Staff seem to be skirting around the topic.

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your mum, it sounds like she is very poorly at the moment and this understandably must be a worrying time for you.

I think it would be a good idea to ask to see if you can talk with the doctor involved in her care to hear from them their thoughts about what is going on and what will happen next.

A FIT test as I am sure you are aware looks for blood in the stools. This sometimes is the result of cancer and alongside the other symptoms your mum is having it doesn't sound very good but often more tests are needed to confirm the type and location of the cancer (if she does have it) .

If bowel cancer is suspected alongside a positive fit test then often a colonoscopy ( camera passed up the back passage ) is carried out. But if this isn't possible they may choose to run a CT colonography here instead. If they are unsure where the bleeding is coming from they may decide to carry out tests to check the stomach and small bowel as well as the large bowel.

Depending on how fit the patient is alongside any other health problems they may have they may choose to run less invasive tests to gather information. You can read about other tests used to diagnose bowel cancer here.

I wish we could tell you more but without being involved in your mum's care it really is impossible to say and the answers need to come from the doctors involved.

Speak to the nurse in charge to ask when the doctors rounds are so that you can be there to have a word with them.

I hope you know more soon. Do get back if you need to or alternatively give us a call on 0808 800 4040 weekdays 9-5.

    Best wishes
