Boyfriend found lump in testicle

Around one week ago my boyfriend found a lump in the bottom middle of his testicles. He has since been given an appointment for tests but has to wait until the end of the month. It's a long time to wait and we are both on edge wondering what it could be. It started off quite soft but has since become quite hard. Is there a back log for appointments for urgent tests such as this right now? (Living in the U.K.) Or could that wait mean that it's not suspected to be something serious? We want to know what to expect and also if we would receive some sort of answer on the day of his tests or are expect or to wait even longer. If anyone has any experience to offer advise it would be hugely appreciated.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

Finding a lump in a testicle can cause a lot of concern and I  know waiting for tests and results can be unsettling.

We have some information on cancer waiting times and what to expect here

We have heard that waiting times are varying up and down the country and this is being affected by staffing and still catching up from covid.

One of the tests that may be done is an ultrasound. Ultrasound scans use high frequency sound waves to create a picture of a part of the body. They can show up changes, including abnormal growths.

You can read more about these here

I am not sure what other tests have been organised but this may also include some blood tests and perhaps a scan.  The results are not usually given on the day but may take a couple of weeks before the doctors have had a chance to review all the results. It is always worth your boyfriend asking at his appointment when he is likely to get the results.

Testicular cancer is not a common cancer and 96% of abnormalities affecting the testicles will not be cancerous. The charity Orchid has more information on different testicular conditions including cancer which you can see here

Try not to think about it too much if you possibly can. If you feel that it would be helpful to ring one of the nurses on the helpline then you are both very welcome to do so.

I hope you know more soon.

Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are here Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

    All the Best,

    Catherine

  • Hello.

Around 10 years ago my husband found a lump in his testicle. He was given an ultra sound. He was in his 20s at the Time. He was diagnosed with a cyst and a varocielle (spelling) which is a cluster of viens.

No treatment was given etc unless it really bothered him. We were nervous also as we actually knew someone who as diagnosed a few months before with testicular cancer. Luckily for hubby it turned out fine. I hope your partner gets an app soon xx
