Low methionine diet

Hi, just wondering if anyone has ever heard of a low methionine diet and how it affects cancer cells? There is also an amino acid called methioninase which reportedly causes cancer to die at a cellular level. There is some good and promising research out there on it. It's also reportedly been very effective in enhancing the effects of chemotherapy.

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

You thread has been moved to the nurses for us to get back to you.

I'm afraid I am not aware of a low methionine diet but having a little search myself there seems to have been some small research looking at methionise and cancer in animals. This so far has only been carried out at lab level with further larger studies needed to produce more information and evidence about how this may affect patients.

Just to say when it comes to diet, supplements and alternative treatments and cancer  we always advise patients to be cautious and check with their own specialist team before changing or starting anything new, to make sure it is safe to do so.

As you say methionine is an amino acid that is an essential part of out diet. We have a section of information about vitamins and diet supplements here and individual alternative or complementary therapies here on our website that you can look at.

Our advice generally is for patients to eat as balanced a diet as possible to ensure they are getting all the vitamins and minerals they need.

I hope this is of some help please get back if you have more questions.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
