I absolutely do not want chemotherapy. I could manage surgery and radiotherapy but I know that chemotherapy is something I could not manage, physically or mentally. Does anyone know if I can be allowed that autonomy with treatment? Thank you.

Hi JulieAnna and thanks for posting.
With all treatment you have to give your consent for your health care professional to be able to proceed. This can be for something as straightforward as a blood test, or for something more complex like cancer treatment.
Many people are frightened at the idea of having cancer treatments, particularly because of the side effects. But these can usually be controlled with medicines. Treatment can be given for different reasons and the potential benefits will vary depending upon your individual situation. There is some information here written by Macmillan which you may find useful, about making treatment decisions.
Doctors should explain what happens if you decide not to have treatment, and support you. Your doctor make can a note of your wishes in your medical notes. You can change your mind later if you want to. There is some more information here about this.
You don't say if this is a decision you need to make now, but it may be helpful to discuss it with your healthcare team. They can explain the pros and cons of each option and help you decide what will be right for you.
I hope this is useful.
You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
Take care
Rachel
