Cant stop worrying

Hi,

I went for a consultation yesterday with the Maxillo-Facial Surgery regarding my wisdom tooth. However upon checking my neck the Dr said there was a lump on the left side and if I am aware of it.

I was in shock as I had no idea it was there or how long it has been there. They didn't say much and didn't seem bothered but said to monitor it and come back in a month.

I don't feel unwell, I have been stressed recently but that's about it.

I have been worried sick and there is no way I can do this for a month. It feels quite hard to the touch and doesn't move. It goes upwards when I swallow so I'm thinking is it my thyroid. I don't no I panicking so much :(.

I tried to book an appointment for my gp yesterday as its all online and they haven't got back to me yet.

I'm so stressed about it I can even eat and I've made the mistake of checking online :(. I was thinking of booking a private ultrasound so I can find out sooner what it is. I have no idea what to do :(.

Thank you

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I think if the specialist maxillofacial surgeon was concerned enough about this lump something would have been done or arranged to be done about it while you were at the appointment. I think it is reasonable for this doctor to want to see you again in a month to see if it changes.

In the meantime, I hope you don't mind me saying but resist the urge to prod and touch it a lot as this could make it worse. Instead leave it alone, and go back to have it examined again.

Hopefully your GP can discuss this with you and answer any concerns you have.

I hope you have support at this time. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
