Stage 4 prostate cancer

Hi,

My dad was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer last summer (spread to a large proportion of his skeletons. Initially he was doing well as in well in himself, and he was keen to do other things ie tablets and monthly blockers before trying chemo. His PSA never got to desired levels but did reduce.
fast forward to this June and he was advised to start chemo as it was felt his cancer was not being managed by current methods. He started 24th June and had 5 rounds before he was told to stop chemo as it wasn't doing anything positive and his alk phosphate and PSA were infact rising. He is now palliative and they are trying to manage his pain. This is a real downhill from even a few months ago.
my question I suppose is in worst / best scenario like how long can he logistically manage now he is not able to have any treatment and it had already significantly spread? Like what is realistic. I know people can manage a long time diagnosed stage 4 but now there is no treatment I am just feeling so lost with "what to expect"?
thank you

  • Hello Hardingf01 and thanks for posting,

I am very sorry to learn about your dad and the shift in his circumstances. I can understand you wanting to know what to expect.

Unfortunately there is usually quite a bit of uncertainty about what may lie ahead for someone with an advanced cancer. When a cancer isn't responding to treatment it will start to grow and might spread to other places, but it is difficult to predict how quickly it will grow, where it may spread to and what may happen as a result.

It sounds like your dad has been referred to a palliative care team so it might be worth trying to get in touch with them. They are there to support the family as well as the patient and knowing your dad and all his details may be able to tell you a bit more.

I think for now the key thing is to get on top of your dad's pain and I hope this happens soon.
