Questions about biopsy and nipple smear

So I went and had abiopsy of around ten lumps in my breast. Also a bleeding nipple discharge. The biopsy came back inconclusive so I had another. No word of the smear. Now 3 weeks on, I have an appointment in clinic as they said they need to remove some of the ducts but said the biopsies showed no breast cancer. Could this still be DCIS?

  • Hi Sammy,

It's a scary time waiting for results and the not knowing is the worst part.

By the sounds of it, it seems that there has been no cancer cells found in your biopsy which is such good news. Has anyone ever mentioned the possibility of a papilloma? This is a benign condition in the milk ducts that although not cancer does often need removing (removing milk ducts) so it sounds similar to what you are describing. I understand papilloma can also cause discharge.

My only symptom when I went to breast clinic was nipple discharge and they initially thought it was a papilloma. However mammogram showed calcification and subsequent biopsy revealed it was in fact DCIS. The difference between us is that my biopsy showed the cancer cells and yours had none. I'm not a doctor!! But hopefully the lack of any cancer cells in your case is a really good sign.

You will of course worry until you know for sure and I hope your appointment brings some positive news and you will be reassured.

    Take care x

  • Thank you for your reply. Yes good news about my biopsy but I wondered whether that could still come back negative if it was contained in the duct. I have heard of papilloma but my brain goes straight to panic. Guess I'll just have to wait it out until the 9th

  • Hope the wait goes quickly for you and you manage to keep occupied as much as possible to keep your mind away from that scary place it no doubt is wandering to on a regular basis.

Biopsies can detect cancer within the duct, as is the case in DCIS. So I really hope that in your case no cancer means exactly that!

Wishing you all the best for the 9th.

  • That's really reassuring. Thank you so much xx

  • You're welcome.

I hope you get good news. Please let me know how you get on.

    Sending hugs x

  • Hello Sammy860,

I am one of the nurses - our moderators moved your post into our topic area in case we could tell you any more, but I don't have much to add to what PositiveT has already said. Bear in mind that these further investigations are probably to be on the safe side so they can rule out anything serious. Waiting is seldom easy, if you can try not to over think things and keep an open mind.

Feel free to give us a call if you want to talk anything over. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are around 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

    Julia
