Anaemia and calpotectin79 uk

Hi

looking for advice or resassurance I suppose I've recently had a FIT test negative and a calprotection test of 79 I've also shown low iron so my Gp has sent for an urgent appointment to the 2 week wait lower GI clinic I'm terrified especially when today I got a letter from my gp about my referral and said was being checked for cancer!!

my bowel habits have changed but also had my gallbladder removed in 2018 so they've never been great since then also I suffer with GERD so on 40 mg Omeprazole a day which can impact iron levels

now I'm just full of anxiety awaiting a colonoscopy so any help or similar experiences greatly appreciated xx

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

Try not to over think things too much for now and take things one step at a time if you can.

Symptoms and abnormal test results can be caused by so many different factors and in most cases it won't turn out to be cancer. The important thing is for any red warning flags to be picked up and then for more tests to be arranged to rule anything sinister out.

The quickest way for things to be done in the NHS is through the suspected cancer pathway ( or 2 week wait) as it's called. However the majority of people put on this route won't be diagnosed.

As you say anaemia can also be triggered by different things including some medications so there may be simple reason for this. Likewise calprotectin levels measure the amount of inflammation in the bowel that can also be the result of irritable bowel disease IBD here.

Hopefully you will know more about your situation soon but do get back if you have more questions. Our helpline is also open 9-5 mon-fri on 0808 800 4040.

    Take care

    Naomi

  • Thank you I've since spoke to Triage of the 2WW clinic and have a telephone appointment this Monday so hoping after a thorough discussion and them seeing all my health records I'll have some clarity of their concerns and next steps xx
