Nipple hypersensitivity

Hi, I had a lumpectomy and a few sentinel lymph nodes removed three weeks ago. To find the lymph nodes the tracer dye was injected into my nipple.  The wounds have healed really well and I have full movement in my arm. Unfortunately, I have been left with an extremely sensitive nipple. Water from a shower can be quite uncomfortable and even the lightest touch can be unpleasant.

Wondering if this is normal?

  • Hello Ginger1 and thanks for posting,

I am not sure if this is normal in as much as I don't know how often nipple hypersensitivity is reported after a lumpectomy, but numbness and pins and needles can occur so I expect this is something that can happen because nerves have been disturbed during surgery and in hypersensitivity could be more excitable as a result. So it should improve over time, but I can appreciate that for now it isn't very pleasant to have to put up with it.  Do run this past your surgical team/breast care nurse when you have the chance and see what they say.

    I hope things improve soon.
