Thyroid biopsy

My 17yr old son had a FNA biopsy done on a nodule on his thyroid. They said the results would be through within 7-10 days. We are on the 15th day. I called the hospital this morning, still no results. I asked if his sample could have been lost. It isn't lost they will inform us as soon as results come through. I kept thinking "no news is good news". Note I'm an emotional wreck with worry, so good knows how my son is feeling Has anyone else waited this long? What were your results?

  • Hello and thank you for your post

I am sorry to hear about waiting for results, and can appreciate that this a difficult and stressful time for you all.

Unfortunately, these sort of timeframes are not unusual at the moment. It does seem to relate to a few factors. In some areas, there is a shortage of consultant pathologists to read and interpret results. There can be administrative delays, as the NHS reboots post Covid. Some biopsy specimens do need to be sent off to larger more specialised pathology laboratories for analysis, and this can add to wait times, depending on the number of samples that each lab is currently seeing.

If you do not hear within the next week or so, then do make contact with the hospital team/department to ask about it. Your son's GP may be able to look into for you as well, but I'm not sure.

I hope that you will find out more about your situation soon,

    Best wishes,

    Vanda
