Bleeding a year after menopause

Hi, am very worried. I had my last period, I thought, a year ago. Thought that was it. And then yesterday out of the blue it started. I have just arrived on holiday too. So feel even more upset as I won't be able to see my GP for at least two weeks. Am terrified as to why this is happening. As totally unexpected. And the timing couldn't be worse! Trying to be brave

  • Hi Rubytodd

I had a very similar experience 18 months ago.  Like you I thought I was done with periods (I'd actually gone 11 months without one) then some really heavy bleeding took me by surprise.  It wasn't normal for me as my periods had always been light.  I thought the worst and was sent for a vaginal ultrasound which showed a slightly thickened womb lining.  Then went on to have a uterine biopsy (inconclusive) then a hysteroscopy.  It was all pretty stressful but thankfully everything was completely normal!

Its standard to refer any post menopausal bleeding so if you see your GP you will probably have the same. Don't be overly worried about this.  Best to get it checked but it's very unlikely to be anything sinister.  Enjoy your holiday.

  • Ah thank you so much for responding to my post. The odd thing was, last week I had sore boobs, as I remember them when I was getting regular periods, (something I've not experienced for a year.)

Then yesterday, there it was. I would expect my Doctor to be thorough when I return. Have already reached out to get an appointment for when I get home. Rather than waiting to get home and then trying to get an appointment.

It's been more upsetting and worrying being so far away from home too. Knowing I can't do anything more about it yet. So far the bleeding is light and am hoping it stays that way, and at least goes of it's own accord in the next few days.

Meanwhile I am trying to relax as much as is possible and enjoy the holiday I have waited 3 years to do.

Thank you again for your kind and reassuring words, it's very much appreciated indeed.

  • You're very welcome.  I was just the same, sore boobs then bleeding.  I think it's just us ladies of a certain age having one last go!  Menopause likes to give us these little gifts from time to time!!

If you do get sent for a hysteroscopy don't panic it's just standard procedure.  Also don't Google horror stories about it being incredibly painful.  I found it uncomfortable but not too bad and they numb your cervix first with local.

    Best of luck.

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

Sometimes after a flight or long travelling for example, women can experience a period, not sure why, but it happens.

You can check in with your GP on your return, and see what they say. They might refer you for an ultrasound as routine practice, but try not to unduly worry about it. Most one off bleeding is nothing serious. Doctors are more concerned with persistent ongoing symptoms generally.

    Best wishes,

    Vanda
