Advice

I  am not sure what I am asking to be honest. I feel anxious mainly about the time it is taking and the uncertainty about a diagnosis. I have had a normal ultra sound scan, a vaginal scan and a cancer blood test. They found an ovarian cyst on my ovary after the first scan. This was done because I was dangerously anaemic and needed an urgent blood transfusion. Since then I had another scan and a vaginal scan. The cancer blood test was normal. I have heard  nothing for 4 weeks then suddenly they say I need an MRI. I have not had any explanation just a text  message from my GP. Can anyone tell me what this means. Does this mean it is cancer ? I am worried that this started 9 weeks ago and there is still no definitive diagnosis. Am I over reacting?

  • Hello Elaine. v. and thank you for your post.

I'm sorry to hear that you are going through this and I can appreciate your concern.

However, remember that so far none of the scans or tests you have had have indicated a possible cancer.  MRI scans are used for many reasons and not just to see if something could be cancerous, often it's used to get more information. Having one still does not mean anyone necessarily has cancer.

I do think you should have been told why you need to have a MRI, perhaps if you knew that it would help. If you are able to get back in touch with the team that have referred you to have one one then do ask why you need it.

I hope you will be okay. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
