Cervical Ectropion

Hi Ladies,

I feel quite silly posting on here as I feel I may be over working myself and thinking the absolute worst.

Im 22 I've had 3 kids first being at 18. After my 2nd child I developed severe bleeding and pain. I went to my GP who stated my cervix looked a little inflamed but could be down to being post-partum and kind of threw it off. However, the bleeding and pain continued. I eneded having a severe period of bleeding which lasted 4 weeks which I went to the hospital for and was told it was due to my body getting back to normal.

This was in 20/21. Fast forwarding to now the bleeding still persisted. Even during my pregnancies. After my last 2 babies, midwives strongly advised to get a smear but never said why.

Now going to a completely different GP they say different. It started as me complaining for a UTI which was causing bleeding from my vagina. Unfortunately for me, any UTI I've had since the age of 20 has done this. I was referred for a colposcopy twice which were denied due to  no good reasoning as to why I should recieve it as no swabs etc were taken.

Yesterday I went to my GP had infection swabs and also an examination where she stated the diagnoses Cervical Ectropian which she then proceeded to say thats what the other medical professionals were seeing. However its never gone away.

My GP has now referred me 3rd time to colposcopy but put me on the '2 week cancer wait' list. Also to Gynae and for a scan bloods etc.

Im seeing that this ectropian is not linked to cancer yet Im worrying myself for how many tests for me have been ordered.

Im still experiencing severe bleeding on and off , pain in my lower back and fatigue.

I just feel so lost in my own head and would like some advice from ladies whom have been in a similar situation or the same.

I'm sorry for this being so long :)

  • Hello

What a difficult time you have been having, but it is good to read that you are now getting some tests and investigations done which hopefully will finally get some answers for you and some treatment to stop the bleeding.

A cervical ectropion is not cancer, this is an overgrowth of glandular cells on the cervix which can cause bleeding and discomfort.  Sometimes they resolve on their own, but they do sometimes need treating.  There is some good information about them on the Jo's Trust website here .

I think the GP has put you on the urgent referral pathway as there is a possibility that your symptoms might be caused by cancer, so they are doing the right thing.  But it is important to know that most people put on this pathway do not turn out to have cancer.  So there is still a very good chance that your symptoms will be caused by the ectropion or an infection.

If you have been losing blood for some time this might help to explain your tiredness as you may well be anaemic and there could be a number of explanations for the back pain including infection.

I can appreciate this must be worrying for you, but at least something is getting done about your problems now.  There is still a good chance this wont be cancer, but whatever the cause it sounds like you need to be seen and assessed to see if there is any treatment that you need.  It must be very distressing for you.

It is also very difficult waiting for tests to be done and for their results so it is quite understandable that you might be feeling worried or anxious at the moment.  Try to do some things to take you mind off it all.  The community here are very supportive and but do bear in mind that as this is a cancer forum it may keep cancer front of mind for you, when in fact this may well be something else.

    I hope that helps.

    Take care

    Martin
